Theaters need to put in a lot more efforts then they are now in order to get the attention of the younger lot of today. There has to be constant invention on their part as far as presentation and storytelling is concerned. Just plain Shakespeare or Dickens isn’t enough.
The language culture and freedom of expression today is way to different then what it was before. The youth today are restless, constantly curious, active and full of life. This is where the plays as well need to be in sync with the contemporary trines of today. Even while playing performances of an old Shakespeare or other classic literature, they should be revamped and given an essence of today’s times. This would in turn get the attention of the youth who might as well give theater another shot.
Royal Court and the RSC are two of the few theaters that have already began with churning out innovative plays targeted at the younger generation. Punk Rock, a play by Simon Stephens has opened to rave reviews by critics as well as being appreciated and lauded by the people. In fact it is also getting in large young crowds for the shows. All said and done, in order to get today’s young and restless minds to the drama theaters, more of such efforts will have to come into play.
